Are You Hungry Or Just Bored
Susan Nelson Hopkins
People can eat when they are not actually hungry. They may think that they are, but sometimes people are just using food as an excuse. It could be because a person is bored or scared or nervous.
To learn the difference between really being hungry and nervous eating, experience is the best teacher.
When you're really hungry, you feel like eating a meal, not just a snack. Eating for any other reason is nearly always the result of stress, anxiety... or just plain boredom.
So, what's the common sense answer? Do whatever you can to remove or at least lessen the stress or anxiety. Talk to someone, get some help. Are you just bored? That's easy... join a club, get a hobby, volunteer, go to church and make new friends.
As far as food goes, stock up on plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Even healthy breakfast cereals and low-fat or non-fat milk is a good mid-morning or mid-afternoon meal. If your schedule allows, try eating five small, balanced meals instead of three larger ones... you'll always feel full.
Here's a tip... If your pantry and refrigerator is full of fresh, nutritious foods, even eating for all the wrong reasons can still be healthy. Physically, anyway... the emotional garbage still needs to be fixed.
Well, are you ready to challenge that next urge to eat? If you're hungry enough to eat a meal, then you truly are hungry. But if all you want is a snack, then you're not hungry... it's just stress, anxiety, or boredom. Guess what... it's ok to cheat IF your snacks are nutritious foods.
So, it's kind of a no-brainer. Stock your house with nutritious foods, so you can take your time overcoming the eating-syndrome caused by that nasty stress and anxiety, and that boring boredom.
That's it... good ol' common sense will see you through it.
